The roadway reconstruction phase of the Atlantic Street Bridge Replacement project is progressing with 24/7 construction in order to complete the work and re-open the roadways. Multiple concurrent construction operations involve excavating the existing roadway and removing material; installation of new conduits, utilities and drainage; installation of concrete forms on the new bridge abutments and center pier and continued work along the retaining walls on South State Street and Atlantic Street.

These operations are critical to the project as the new roadway has been re-designed to improve operational efficiencies with 3 north bound and 3 southbound lanes. Additionally, the roadway will be lowered to increase the vertical clearance under the bridge to 14’6”. Once the roadway work is completed, the next phase of the operation will include new sidewalks, pavement markings, illumination and brick pavers. To compliment the surrounding area, a simulated stone masonry exterior will be featured on the center pier and retaining walls.

Following the roadway improvements, additional upgrades are also underway to construct a new Track #7, canopy and platform to service Metro North customers.

The new bridge, the new roadway and surrounding streetscape improvements combined with the addition of a dedicated train track and platform for local train service will enhance railroad efficiencies, facilitate future development in the South End, enhance accessibility to the Stamford Transportation Center and increase connectivity between the South End and Stamford’s downtown.

Detours, road closures and pedestrian detours remain in effect during the roadway improvement phase of construction.
