What is the project construction schedule?
Construction activities commenced in the Spring of 2016 on the new fly-over ramp for the north bound Exit 8 I-95 ramp. The new ramp was completed in 2018 as part of Phase 1 activities. Phase 2 work focused on improvements to Atlantic Street and the replacement of the Metro North/Atlantic Street bridge. This phase of the project was completed September 2019. Catenary and station improvements, along with the installation of a new Track #7, will continue through 2021.
Why are these improvements needed?
The purpose and need of the project in Phase 2 is to improve accessibility to the South End of Stamford and improve operational efficiencies along Atlantic Street while simultaneously replacing a railroad bridge that was constructed in the late 19th century and requires regular maintenance to maintain a state of good repair. The proposed improvements will facilitate future development in the South End, enhance accessibility to the Stamford Transportation Center and increase connectivity between the South End and Stamford’s downtown. Atlantic Street, under the new bridge, will be widened to accommodate 3 southbound lanes and 3 northbound lanes. Atlantic Street will also be lowered under the bridge to provide a standard clearance of 14’6″ to allow for emergency and commercial vehicle travel. Also occurring during Phase 2 will be the construction of a new dedicated Track #7 for local train service along with catenary and platform improvements to the train station.
